At 7-years-old Lily found herself at animal control and we haven’t been able to figure out why. She sat there for two months, but no one came to claim her and no one came to adopt her.
That’s when one of our foster homes fell in love with her. 7-years-old means Lily is a “senior dog.” And senior dogs can be hard to adopt out. Why? Well, we aren’t 100% sure, but we can guess that there could be a few reasons. We interviewed Lily to help expel a few of those myths for you.
Myth: Can’t teach an old dog, new tricks
Lily’s Response: Have you seen the photos and videos of me at Zoom Room lately? Not only have I been learning new tricks, I’m more athletic than some of the younger pups that attend. I can balance on a Bosu ball, jump through hoops, and climb up A-frames like I’ve been doing it my whole life! Not only that, but my foster mom has also been teaching me more boring things like: Sit, Down, Touch, Place, Wait, Leave it, Drop it, and the list is growing every day.
Myth: It’s hard to bond with a senior dog
Lily’s Response: I suppose dogs are like people and every dog is different, but I love all people! If you have hands to pet me, a way to take me on walks, and a blanket to snuggle under with me, then we’ll be best friends for life!
Myth: Senior dogs are lazy and just sleep all the time
Lily’s Response: Don’t get me wrong, I love a good nap! But I will also zoom around outside and I’m ALWAYS down for a stroll through the neighborhood or a park. My marathon days may be over, but that doesn’t make me lazy!
Myth: Puppies are cuter
Lily Response:
Okay, all fun aside…don’t overlook a senior dog. At Canine Cupids, we know that senior dogs are going to be with us longer, may have higher medical costs, and are going to be harder to adopt. That doesn’t stop us from giving them a second chance. Don’t let it stop you either.
